On the track “Sick Sad Little World,” Incubus advises, “You better get careful or you’ll compromise everything you are.” It is a noble gesture, but comes across sounding like nothing more than a remake of “Warning.” Even the first single released, “Megalomaniac,” resembles a little boy’s tirade against his favorite artist selling out. The intelligence is left to the titles, as in the single “Megalomaniac” and “Agoraphobia.” Another problem with Crow is that the lyrics which once made Incubus utopian prophets now only come across as preachy. A good portion of the lyrics on Crow come across as shallow and thoughtless, almost as if Brandon Boyd lost his trusty dictionary and went for a copy of Billboard instead.

What’s missing is the bravery of the original lyrics, the willingness to go above the heads of their audience and simply hope that they’d follow. Incubus’ new, CD Crow Left of the Murder, is a revisiting of their earlier albums without the use of big words like “existential.” Which is not to say that album is bad. Albums like Science, Make Yourself and Morning View were embraced by fans for their amazing forays into the world of anti-pop. Incubus, truly a “thinking man’s band,” has always been known for their ultra-intelligent lyricism, along with their combination of top 40 ballads and hard rocking anthems.
